Education

Choose a current story related to African American Studies and education from the list of online sources in the handout and on the introduction page. Try to choose a news outlet that you don’t read regularly so that you can use this assignment to become more familiar with it. To find a relevant story, you should scan the headlines on the home page of whatever magazines or journals you may choose, but also be prepared to do a search of recent published stories. The names of the specific fields may be too broad as search terms; depending on the numbers of links that come up in your initial search, you will have to refine those terms by focusing on a specific issue. Education/sociology issues include Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), black middle class, National Baptist Convention, Church of God in Christ, African Methodist Episcopal Church, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, National Black Catholic Conference, Southwest Athletic Conference, National Urban League, United Negro College Fund, National Black Chamber of Commerce, National Pan-Hellenic Council, The Links, National Council of Negro Women, Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

    Summary:
This article discusses how important it is for Historically Black Colleges and Universities to receive desperately needed government funds in order, for black students to receive a quality education and for these institutions to continue to exist. Arne Duncan, the Secretary of Education, is interviewed by Roland Martin and discusses what the Obama Administration is going to do to help these struggling schools. Especially, since Obama failed to continue a program that gave HBCU’s federal dollars under a program that was started under the Bush Administration.

  3. Historically Black colleges account for 20 percent of the degrees awarded to Black students. I think the Obama administration tried to sneak this by the Black community, but got caught. Given the current state of the economy I can’t blame him. However, I can blame President Obama for forgetting what he came from. Although his presidency did not set off a chain reaction of African Americans practicing Islam and engaging in politics I would argue that some hop was established for a races in the future. Simply stated General Motors should have failed, and colleges and schools should receive money. By giving big box corporations like General Motors money you let people take bigger risks because they know they will be rewarded or saved. College is one of the biggest risks someone can engage in and the Obama administration was not going to back them.
